SARAH JACOBY BLOG POST #2/14

"Humor is almost always anger with its make-up on."

Having a wide range of emotions is part of being human, we rarely can control these emotions or how certain situations make us feel. However we often do not want others knowing how we feel so we hide these emotions or do not say or express what we mean or what we actually want to say. One of our best defense mechanisms is humor, it is not uncommon for someone who is upset or angry to hide behind jokes and laughing. Often when we are angry with someone but do not want to start a fight with them or let them know the extent of our emotions we express our frustrations through humor, hoping they will take the hint. The main character of this book is experiencing so many strong emotions regarding the death of his wife that he hides his anger and sadness by making jokes, almost like he wearing a mask. He is portraying a completely different picture of himself on the outside than how he is really feeling on the inside. That is why I chose this picture, because he is hiding his frustrations behind a mask of humor.
