BRIAN STANIS POST 4 OF 14

"Postwar women, many of whom had lowered their expectations, came to accept their domestic role as the center of their identity."

Even though women were called upon during the times of the war they knew it wouldn't be a permanent rise of status. After the war, when the men came home they were put back to the bottom, kicked out of the jobs, and overall lowered in society. They were sent back to their house work, back to being white noise in a society of manly influence. They were sent back to their prison like duties having to leave their elegant lives behind, knowing they would not be able to live large and free no more, leaving behind an "empty dress"
