"Someplace in the house a clock chimed and a dull rumble of thunder outside echoed it"

The clock is ticking in the house . The house is ominous during the night time. It is quiet in the house and whoever resides in it is lonely. The constant ticking of the clock counts the time that is slowly passing by to whatever might occur. The echo of the thunder is not seen but heard. It is a reflection of mystery inside if the house. The name of the picture Two Views of the Unknown also portrays the mystery. The effect of the clock is the essence of waiting. What is going to happen? What is the time ticking towards?
