DANA SAYDAK #2 of 14

"You can have him now. Put your hand in your pocket. He's yours! He's mine! You promised! You bastard! Phony bastard! You promised!....He was courteous and polite. He was quite kind to you. You can go home now. You have seen him and it didn't happen. And now you can take your autographed album and you can go back home." (p.37)

In the novel, "Let Me Take You Down", Jack Jones dissects the murder of John Lennon that was committed by Mark Chapman. The struggle with your own mental devils is something that Chapman struggled with when deciding to murder Lennon. Chapman felt as though the jealous child within him wanted to see his hero dead and the adult version of himself was simply going through the motions. Chapman's quote explicitly represents his debate within himself to go about such a viscous task.

This image depicts the devil on a mans back forcing him to play an instrument; essentially controlling him. This evidently connects to Jones' quote because it was as though Chapman's child version of himself was the devil puling the strings on his adult actions. Chapman, although a murderer, sees himself as a misguided adult simply following the instructions of his devil-like childhood.
