KAITLIN CONGO #10/14

#10

"The world had never seemed so new to me as it did during those first few months of college. My first lesson was on race. I was stunned to learn that not everybody wanted to be white. They become more involved in their own ethnicity and culture.

In this book Acts of Faith, this passage refers to Dr.Patel being in his college days as a Indian Muslim learning that college students outlook in race becomen a lot different, where in High School we often try to assimilate to what the majority is doing (the white students) whereas in college, it is just the opposite, we tend to gravitate to those of the same race as us and begin to truly embrace the culture surrounded by the race we're a part of. For example, in this picture this is a sterotypical picture of young black guys, from the huge baggy clothes to their mannerisms of their body positions. This is the epitome of black culture when people think of it. And these guys are now all congregating ostrisizing themselves even and getting into trouble (hense the graffiti wall in the back). I chose this picture to display the stigma behind a certain racial group was people imagine that specific group, although often not true. But this pciture encompassed black culture.
