"At the highest point on the mound above the town was a great temple. Naked slaves rushed from it, bearing lit torches [...]"

Later in the story, Dumphee and the Native American he's with go through another time warp and wind up back in the days where the Mayans had their great civilizations. The Mayans had their impressive pyramid shaped temples, and they were where royalty
(i.e emperors) lived. Also, it's where slaves, guards, etc... stayed to serve the empires. Furthermore, it's where all the killings, sacrifices, and partying went on. That's why I decided to post David Harvey's Chichen Itza.
